Gustav
Home

I've got a bunch of pictures to post from Kyla's birthday and various August activities but figured I might as well get the Gustav stuff up first.  Baton Rouge was hit pretty hard.  This was our first hurricane and although there was a lot of destruction, we were pretty lucky.  We lost most of our pecan tree and had a bunch of debris, but the house is fine as are we.  We lost our power at about 10:30 Monday morning.  The storm really kicked in close to noon and raged on until about 7pm.  Brent took a snippet of footage which I posted a video on Google video.  You can view it HERE.  (It's best viewed using 'original size' because it gets pretty blurry.)

Coloring away in the dark

We hung out by the back door for most of it, trying to focus on the radio while keeping Kyla occupied at the same time.  She was pretty calm through it all....and even took a long nap!

Brent headed into school early the next morning to check his freezers, only to return shortly.  The entrance to our subdivision was blocked by downed trees and power lines, so he couldn't get out.  He took his bike in, and the wicked rains kicked in for his ride back home.  You'll see a lot of water pooled in these shots but luckily, it all kept flowing and nothing hit the house.

Bright light! Bright light!

Who said you don't need a snow shovel in La?!?!

Brent kicked butt cleaning up the debris.  He was at it right away.  We still need to deal with the tree, but we're bringing someone to handle that.  They're snapped too high for us to do ourselves.

We took a walk around the neighborhood to check out the damage.  It was crazy to see houses with trees in them and entire trees, pulled out of the ground and laying down roots and all.  These are shots of the entrance.

Our power was not restored until day 7.  Kyla did pretty well amusing herself with a variety of art projects and activities.  We spent some of our days hanging out in Brent's office.  LSU had power, or at least emergency power, the whole time.  Their a/c actually kicked in towards the end of the week which was a very nice treat!  These are just some shots of Kyla throughout the week.

Several people were still out of power when ours was restored...but we were lucky in that the Doerrler's got power back and offered up their place as our temporary home.  We stayed two very comfortable nights with them.  Kyla and Dylan had a blast!

Hanging in the office

We had a nice surprise waiting for us at the house when the power was restored.  I had been planning a "Butterfly Birthday" party for Kyla at school.  The party, of course, didn't happen because it was scheduled to be the day after the hurricane.  I had a butterfly kit, with 5 caterpillars, all ready to go.  They went into chrysalis the weekend before...and by Sunday, they were out!  She was very excited and said "They're beautiful!"  She drew them a bunch of pictures which she insisted go inside the cage.
