A Zoo Visit in November
Home

Kyla and I made a visit to the zoo this weekend.  It was a beautiful morning for it.  It had rained a bit the night before, so it was cool and comfortable.  The animals must have agreed because they were all out instead of hiding from the heat.

My goal this trip was to hit the "elephant show".  They apparently have a show of sorts twice a day, but we've never seen it.  The signs are always wrong, or it's been cancelled because of the heat.  While I have mixed feelings about watching an elephant perform, I knew she'd love it and it's here....so might as well hang out and catch it, right?  I talked it up and had her all excited.  We even waited around an extra hour because the signs were wrong....but again, we didn't get the show.

"Go, Tigers!"

About the zebras..."Awww....them are friends"

Instead, the guy announced to the very small crowd that he's doing an educational program on animal adaptations.  Hum....seemed a little too deep for my 3 year old, but we gave it a try.  She was into it alright...in fact, she was participating.  Her hand went up for every question he asked the audience, even though she had no answer. For example, "can anyone name an animal adaptation?" and her hand shoots up....and he's calling on her?!?!  She peppered the rest of the presentation with many (loud) questions about the guy, the crowd and the animals he brought out "What's his name?"  "Are they friends?" "It's not gonna bite me, is it?" and most importantly, "Where are the elephants?!?"  The crowd laughed when that one came out.  I was eventually able to talk her into slipping out the back, but we actually did end up staying for most of it.

We hit the playground, which I owed her since I lied and told her it was closed during our "Boo at the Zoo" visit.  She then had her first visit into the "contact yard".  I know it seems unbelievable that she's never been in there, since we're always at the zoo....but it's not marked and until I saw a kid in there a few months ago, I just thought it was a barnyard exhibit full of goats and sheep!  Needless to say, she loved it so it will probably become a regular part of our visits.
