January Activities
Home

Kyla is about 3 1/2 now, so I thought it was a good time for an update on her daily routine, favorite activities, etc.  This will be a wordy page, but I am including some shots from this weekend.

Kyla's nap is history. If necessary, I can get her to catnap a bit while I lay with her but it's almost more hassle than it's worth.  On the bright side, she's worn out enough to go to bed willingly at 7pm.  The bad side, of course, is that she's up early at 6:30 or so.  This is ok during the week because she needs to be up for school, but it would be nice to have her sleep in on the weekends a bit!  Sometimes she'll go out and amuse herself....other times, she busts in our room singing "It's morning time!  Wake up!".

Concentrating

I've really been trying hard to keep Kyla away from the computers.  I figure she's going to be planted in front of one for the rest of her life, why start now?  I was also nervous about her becoming a potato in front of it. Brent and I are not the best examples since we're always on ours....so I guess it was inevitable.
I cleaned up one of our lesser used machines and made it hers, just a browser that will take us to PBSKids and Noggin.  Most of their games are a little beyond her right now but she really likes the "coloring" pages.  She does well with the mouse and the other day, I caught her booting up the machine and turning on the monitor!  She does tire of it though, so it's been easy to limit.  Having it in a cabinet helps, too.  I close it up when we're done.
I still try to include Kyla in all my daily tasks, esp. in the kitchen.  She's a very picky (PIA!) eater.  I know that getting them in the kitchen helps with that...so I really try hard to get her involved in every meal and to allow to her make choices.  She loves helping and is always excited about the food, but I can't say it's really motivated her much.  It's still fun and good bonding for us, but she doesn't always eat what she enthusiastically creates!

My Sous Chef!

I try all the little tricks, like serving food with toothpicks and cutting into shapes.  I've even been trying some Kraft and Pillsbury "kid's meals".  Here we're making little mini meatloaves in muffin tins.  She picked out the menu herself....mini meatloaves, mashed potatoes, broccoli with a cheese sauce (special request!) and an ear of corn.  She pretty much ate none of it.

From what I understand, the picky eating is typical for this age.  She seems to be on target for her other activities at this age, too.   She will count to about 16, but when actually counting items, she stops short of that.  She knows her alphabet and is better at identifying them than singing them.  She can sign a few of them now which has been fun to work with again!  She will gladly spell her name for you "My name is Kyla. K-Y-L-A. Kyla" and likes to pick out letters in her name or those in her friends' names.  "There's a K, like in my name, Kyla" or "There's an H, like in Houston's name" which is all stuff that's carrying over from school.  She absorbs a lot there!
