Queenstown
January 9th

We left Te-Anau today and headed to Wanaka, taking a side trip to Queenstown along the way.

If you've looked into the South Island at all, you'll find that we've by-passed one of the island's biggest attractions - Milford Sound.  It was about a 2.5 hour drive from Te-Anau and would have been easily accessible, but this is an extremely busy this time of year for them.  There is one route in and out of the area and traffic is really heavy.  Many tour buses head that way as well.  This is also home to the world famous Milford Track which is so popular now that it must be booked ahead of time just to walk.  Although we would have liked to view these areas, we felt that our time would be better spent in other areas.  Maybe next trip?  :)

We just took a side journey through Queenstown.  We didn't want to miss the views of Queenstown - but we also didn't want to stay in Queenstown.  It's a party town and home of the "extreme" sports.

We took it easy - took a gondola ride to the top of the mountain and had some lunch.  You could have taken a luge ride down - but I chickened out.  It was a beautiful place, though.

After that, we spent the night in Wanaka...to rest up for our puzzling the next day.
