Franz Joseph Glacier
January 13th

Today we took a guided half day tour of the Franz Joseph Glacier.  This glacier is one of the world's fastest moving glaciers.  In the past, it has moved 5m a day and more commonly 2.5m a day.  It currently averages about 1m a day - which is still well above the typical glacier movement.

We were suited up with boots, clamp-on talons for the ice and Gore-tex jackets. The divided us up into groups and took us up.  The climb really wasn't that bad.  The glacier is pretty far up, but they had ice steps cut so it was a fairly stable climb.

These are pictures taken while we were on the ice.  I've tried to include some people in these shots to give you a better sense of how large the glacier actually was.  We climbed for over an hour and barely made it 1/3rd of the way up.

I was instructed to make note here that not only is Brent standing downhill - he is also standing in a divot......

It was a great trip.  Although I really didn't think about the fact that Brent has spent the last three months walking on ice - but he enjoyed it anyway.  I'm sure he felt like a bit of a tool following around a guide though:)
