Fox Glacier
January 12th

We headed towards the glaciers today and visited the first of the two, the Fox Glacier.  It rained the whole morning but stopped just as we got to the terminal face walk.  The Fox Glacier, one of the few advancing glaciers in the world, averages around 40cm a day.

This shot was taken as we approached the glacier.  It is of a terminal moraine from the last hundred years.  A moraine is a wall of debris formed at the glacier's sides.  These are the piles of gravel and rock on either side of the water.

This shot shows the glacial "berries" which float along the water as the glacier breaks down.

Overview of terminal as we approached.

They rope the glacier off for safety reasons, and you can't go any further without a guide.  To get a closer look, we're taking a guided tour of the Franz Joseph Glacier tomorrow.
