Auckland
December 15th & 16th

Sunday and Monday were basically tied up in travel. The bus trip from Taupo to Auckland is about 5 hours.

We got in on Sunday, checked into our rathole and went out for a big dinner.  Italian food - kiwistyle:)  Sharon took me out for my birthday, so we did it up with dessert and wine, too.  It was all very good.

Here is the one Christmas decoration in town.  Seriously - that's not a joke.  No tree - no garland - no lights - it's very low-key.

Although....he is pretty fancy.  He winks and flips his finger.

Sharon and I parted ways on Monday.  She flew back to Pittsburgh, while I was making my way to Wellington that night by train.  I had to kill the day in Auckland, so I decided to do a little cheapo ferry tour to Davenport.  It's right across the harbor.  They took us up the two volcano cones - Mt. Victoria and North Head. Some good views of the city from here.
After that, I decided that the least expensive way to finish my rainy afternoon would be to take in a flick.  Star Trek was not playing(!!!).
Caught my train - it's an ~11 hour journey to the capital city.   Even though I didn't sleep much, it surprisingly went fast.  Every time I opened my eyes, though, the Chinese kid next to me was staring.  Although I was staring at him, too - what else can you look at on a dark train?  Ha!  From Wellington, I caught the ferry about an hour after I arrived.  The ferry ride is about 3 hours between the islands.

I'm in Picton now and it's raining.  Not the misty, little Auckland stuff - it's pouring.  I start my Queen Charlotte Track walk tomorrow, so here's hoping it clears up a bit!  If it doesn't - I've got my gear in tow.
